This post is a tribute to my genius husband. HE PASSED THE BAR! Congratuations, Fabio! You are now a lawyer!!!
You may be wondering why I think he is a genius when you alone probably know several people who passed the Bar the first time they took it. (FYI: Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton didn't pass the Bar the first time they took it.) It's important to understand that after law school, most students get to take a lot of time to study. They often take months spending their days just studying the massive binders full of laws they have to regurgitate in 24 essays in 3 days. When they go in to take the Bar, they are prepared, practiced, and have every reason to feel hope that after their months dedicated to nothing but what they are about to do at this moment, they will be successful. Fabio on the other hand, had to work 10+ hour days, and study at night. He studied any time between 6pm and 10pm on weekdays and our weekends were mostly dedicated to those 2 massive, grey binders that found their home on our kitchen table. He finished his studying on the plane to Seattle and spent his evenings in the hotel pouring over last minute material.
I must put another plug in for my "genius." Most of you know (if his name alone wasn't enough) that Fabio didn't start speaking English until he was 20. I cannot imagine, as a native English speaker, trying to write 24 essays about the law in 3 days so articulately as to impress the people who grade the Bar. Can you imagine doing it in a second language??? My guess, after reading some of Fabio's very complicated practice essays, is that he is a far better writer than most native English speakers. Wow...I will never cease to be amazed. (Mostly because his English vocabulary and spelling is better than mine...but the Bar thing is impressive too.)
Results of the exam were sent out on Friday. He had it sent to his former boss/friend's house in Seattle so he could know the results as soon as possible. Because of the time difference, at 2:30am, we received a phone call, and the first words that came out of the phone from his friend were, "Congratulations! You're a lawyer!" We were so relieved and happy...even if we were half asleep! Now we can make definite plans and dismiss any nightmarish thoughts of having to take the Bar again!
Who would have guessed that a boy from Taranto, Italy would become an attorney in the U.S.? It doesn't happen often, let me tell you. Way to go, Fabio!

happy day! congrats, congrats! i really can't imagine taking the bar (this is why i never pursued law school - among other reasons) let alone having to take the bar in another country aside from your own. i couldn't even name the president/prime minister/leader of italy. i would die if i had to learn all the laws and pass the test in a secondary language. i am impressed! way to go!
